Jamie Oliver Abruptly Closes Cooking Schools Without Reason

Chef Oliver closed all but one of his cooking schools in London, failing to give a reason for the sudden decision

Jamie Oliver’s three cooking schools were known as community hubs where people could eat and take cooking classes.

Jamie Oliver has abruptly closed two of his three “failing” cooking schools, and chefs and teachers were told to leave in the middle of the day. Both employees and customers with booked classes at Recipease were not informed until the last minute, according to the Daily Mail. The abrupt decision left many scratching their heads, as the schools, which began to pop up in 2009, were meant to be community hubs, and “food and kitchen shop[s] where anyone can learn to cook and make great food,” according to Recipease website.

Chef Oliver gave no reasoning for the closing, instead posting on the website, "We are sorry to say that we have decided to close our sites in both Clapham Junction and Brighton. Our flagship store in Notting Hill is still open for café service, shopping, and cooking lessons, so do please come and visit us there if you get the chance.”

The chef has been criticized for not warning his employees of the closure ahead of time. “To be just sacked off just like that. Shameful, as if he couldn't afford to keep us open a few more weeks so we could have a proper send off,” one employee told The Daily Mail.

Customers who already booked classes at the two shuttered locations can get a refund, or transfer their reservations to the Notting Hill location.

The Real Reason Why The Naked Chef Was Cancelled

It's been over 21 years since then-23-year-old British chef Jamie Oliver's game-changing cooking show, The Naked Chef, debuted on BBC 2 in England, before crossing the pond to air on the Food Network. While it may be a lifetime in chef show years since The Naked Chef made its mark, some fans still wonder why Oliver's uber-popular program disappeared into the ether at the close of 2001. But in order to understand why Oliver parted ways with the show that launched his career, we need to take stock of his life and career.

For the uninitiated, there was nothing remotely "naked" about the wunderkind chef who won the hearts of viewers (particularly women) from the get-go. The show's provocative title, according to Now to Love, referred to Oliver's style of preparing stripped-down dishes with superlative flavor and minimum effort, something of a revelation for its time. The recipes might have had a modicum of ingredients, but they didn't lack personality — after all, they were concocted by winsome Oliver, a chef with charm to spare.

Let's dig into the real reason why The Naked Chef was cancelled.
