I love this time of year for many reasons, but first and foremost, I love it for the warm cocktails that are more readily available in bars, restaurants, and my own home. One of my favorite warm cocktails of the season is the Hot Toddy, not only because it warms up chilly bones, but because the mixture of sweet and spicy bourbon, honey, and lemon serves a more medicinal purpose than most over-the-counter drugs available on the market today.

Do you easily get a stuffy nose or head cold during the winter months? Drink a Hot Toddy. Prone to flu-like symptoms? Drink a Hot Toddy. Perhaps you are like me and you have a chronic cold/cough from December to March? Drink a Hot Toddy. Do you see the pattern here?

Today, we present you with two recipes for this classic cure-all cocktail. The first is the traditional version, what we all know as the beloved Hot Toddy. “The point is to have fun with it,” says Dauermann, who’s currently running a hot-toddy-focused pop-up bar inside Stay Gold called Cottontail.

With fun in mind, he’s breaking down what he has declared the ultimate hot-toddy formula — plus five tasty and distinct recipes that you can whip up from the comfort of your home.

The perfect hot toddy, Dauermann explains, consists of the following: Eight ounces of hot water, tea, one ounce of liquor and flavorings (citrus, herbs, spices, honey, etc).

“Each recipe becomes distinct through the . . . tea, spirit and [seasonings],” says Dauermann.

His top tips as you embark on your toddy adventure? “Make sure you brew a strong cup” so the tea flavor isn’t overpowered by citrus and spirit.

This means following the instructions on the box — some teas need to steep for longer or at hotter temperatures than others — and, occasionally, using two tea bags instead of one.

Also, darker and deeper-flavored liquors will need a stronger tea to match. Finally, don’t panic if you don’t have fresh herbs or whole spices — a pinch of the dried or ground kind works just fine.

Textbook toddy


Brew 1 cup of black tea, and pour in 1 ounce of brandy (Dauermann’s pick: Sacred Bond). Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey, then add 1 cinnamon stick, 10 whole cloves and a thin slice of lemon. To make it look extra fancy and stop the spices from bobbing around in the drink, Dauermann suggests “studding” the lemon with the cloves.

Irish cuppa

Using the bottom of a mug, crush 10 whole coriander seeds and set aside. Bring hot water to a boil pour into mug. Steep 2 bags of Earl Grey tea according to box instructions. Remove bags and add 1 ounce Irish whiskey (Dauermann likes Teeling). Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey. Sprinkle crushed coriander seeds onto the surface of the drink (substitute with powdered coriander). Add 1 slice of lemon and stir. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Go green

Use the bottom of a mug to crush 5 cardamom pods. Brew a cup of tea using 2 green-tea bags. Pour in 1 ounce of gin (Dauermann suggests Bimini for its citrusy notes). Add 3 thin strips of whole mace or a pinch of the ground kind (or substitute mace with a pinch of ground nutmeg) and cardamom (or substitute with a pinch of apple-pie spice or a thin slice of ginger). Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey and a thin slice of lemon.

Floral spice

Brew a cup of tea using 2 chamomile tea bags. Pour in 1 ounce of whiskey with a high rye content, such as WhistlePig. (“The dry breadiness of rye pairs nicely with floral chamomile,” says Dauermann.) Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey, then add a thin slice of lemon and 6 dried allspice berries (or substitute with a pinch of ground allspice). Peel a 2-inch strip of grapefruit rind and press into the palm of your hand to help release its oil and fragrance add to drink.

Use the bottom of a mug to crush 10 peppercorns. Brew a cup of tea using 2 raspberry herbal tea bags, such as Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger. Pour in 1 ounce of a rich, dark rum, such as Santa Teresa 1796. Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey. Add crushed peppercorns (or substitute with a pinch of ground pepper). If you're in need of a comforting drink to warm you up quickly, then you have to try this hot toddy recipe. The mix of Irish whiskey, honey and lemon are always perfect and this drink is so easy to make.

The apple cider in this hot toddy recipe is used in place of hot water, which is traditionally used as the base of this drink. If you find that it's a little sweet for you, add a little lemon juice, more spices or use hot water or tea in its place.

Ingredients

  • 25g sugar
  • 25ml water
  • Cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 85g honey
  • 2 sprigs rosemary
  • 75ml Irish whiskey
  • 250ml apple cider
  • Ice
  • Lemon slices and rosemary sprigs, to serve

Method:

  1. Combine the sugar, water, cinnamon stick and cloves in a pot over a medium heat and bring to the boil, then remove from the heat. Discard the cloves and cinnamon sticks and stir in the honey until it dissolves.
  2. Add in the rosemary sprigs and set aside until the mixture cools.
  3. Pour mixture into a jug and add the apple cider and whiskey.
  4. Fill two glasses with ice, then fill with the cocktail mixture.
  5. Serve with a lemon slice and a sprig of rosemary.

  • 1 pumpkin spiced tea bag
  • 3 ounces hot water
  • ¾ to 1 ounces agave nectar (to taste)
  • ½ ounce lime juice

  • Top with hot water.

Oaxacan Ginger Toddy

Mezcal is a perfect liquor for a hot toddy, as you’ll still get smokiness and warmth from the spirit. Try this one that features chartreuse and heavy cream.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce Vamonos Riendo Mezcal
  • ½ ounce yellow chartreuse
  • 1 sugar cube (or teaspoon of white sugar)
  • 1 bag ginger tea
  • Heavy cream
  • Build in a 6-ounce glass. Fill 60 percent of the way up with hot water and add a bag of ginger tea.
  • Steep for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Remove bag and top off with more hot water.
  • To garnish, float hand-shaken heavy cream over the top of the drink.
  • For an optional garnish, grate dehydrated lemon zest over the cream.

The Little Nell Hot Toddy

Cognac (or brandy) has often been used in hot toddies, but whiskey usually reigns supreme. Time to switch it up. The heady floral bouquet in this toddy cocktail keeps it lighter and dangerously drinkable.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Hennessy VSOP (or XO) Cognac
  • 1 bag Rishi Tea’s “Chamomile Medley” tea (or any other chamomile tea)
  • ¾ ounce lemon juice
  • ½ ounce anise
  • Nutmeg
  • Honey simple syrup
  • Build the cocktail in any insulated glassware or mug and top with Rishi’s “chamomile medley” tea.
  • Garnish with a nutmeg-dusted lemon wheel.

Apple Brandy Toddy

This hot toddy features brandy and sherry and hails from Minneapolis — where they know something about a good warming cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ ounces Tattersall Apple Brandy
  • ¾ ounce honey apple syrup (recipe below)
  • ½ ounce amontillado sherry
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 4 ounces chamomile tea (use twice as many bags as standard)

For the honey apple syrup:

  • In an Irish Coffee mug, add the brandy, sherry, simple syrup, and bitters, and top with the hot chamomile tea.
  • Garnish with cinnamon stick and lemon wheel.

The Naughty Toddy

This toddy gets a fall kick with pumpkin and cinnamon, and Pisco — a type of Brandy originating in the winemaking regions of Peru and Chile — is a great flavor addition, with notes of fruit and citrus.


It’s cold season and this winter has been harsh. Having succumbed to the evil flu earlier this week, I decided to explore the aged old cure all, the hot toddy. I started with a tea-based toddy, but really took to a clove, cinnamon and lemon rind mix. Simmering those spices unleashes all their goodness and lets it get into your bones, really.

Of course, you’ll want to keep doing all the other things you need to do to get over a cold.

Doubt the Toddy’s power? A nice reader credits this recipe for easing her father’s asthma. We’re not doctors, but we do think a well-made hot toddy can make that cold just a bit more bearable.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz whiskey, brandy or rum
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ¼ lemon
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Whole clove

Instructions

Coat the bottom of a mug with the honey, add liquor and juice of the lemon. On the side, boil water with cinnamon, cloves and lemon rind for about 3 minutes. Pour the water through a strainer into the mug. Serve with a fresh lemon wedge.


The Cranberry Apple Hot Toddy Recipe

November is here and that means it’s time to start drinking warming cocktails. While there are a host of warm cocktails to choose from, one of my absolute favorites is the traditional hot toddy. Not only does it help to soothe your cold, it’s also absolutely delicious.

The traditional hot toddy recipe is simply a mix of whiskey, hot water, honey, and lemon. But as you know, I love creating twists on the classics, so today I am sharing a recipe for a cranberry and apple hot toddy. Cranberry and apple not only add a seasonal flair, they also provide a taste upgrade to the traditional cocktail and it’s still dead simple to make. Instead of using hot water, substitute cranberry and apple juice to make the cocktail extra festive and tasty. I also used bourbon to amp up the spiciness of the drink because it pairs well with cranberry and apple as well as citrus.

So if you’re in need of a new and easy cocktail recipe for the holidays, give this seasonal cranberry and apple hot toddy a try. It’s easy to make and the perfect substitute for that nightly hot tea before bedtime.


Hot Toddy

Boil water. Pour boiling water into a mug, to pre-warm it. After a minute, empty water, add ingredients (see below), top with boiling water and garnish with a lemon or orange slice studded with cloves and/or a cinnamon stick.

Notes on Ingredients

Whiskey: I personally prefer Scotch or Irish whiskey here, but American whiskey works as well. As does Japanese whisky, if you&rsquore made of money. If I could choose any brand, it would be Redbreast 12-year Irish whiskey. It&rsquos pot-stilled, which means it&rsquos fuller and richer. One of the Hot Toddy&rsquos main dangers is being too thin and a single malt scotch or pot-still Irish whiskey helps offset that.

Lemon Juice: Fresh juice. Actually, the original Toddy didn&rsquot have lemon juice at all and was essentially just a Hot Old Fashioned: whiskey, sugar and hot water. That is good but can be a little dull unless you pick a whiskey of some serious character (like a smoky scotch), so making it a hot whiskey sour with some lemon juice adds some much-welcome tension and complexity.

Honey/Ginger: Honey is a great way to add body to this drink. You don&rsquot need to add ginger, but I find it adds a delightful spice. For my honey ginger syrup, I bring 2 cups honey, 1 cup water and about a 4 to 6 oz. piece of ginger (chopped) to simmer in a pan for 5 minutes, before straining the solids out.

Hot Water: You want to do everything in your power to serve this as hot as possible. The only way this drink goes seriously wrong is if it&rsquos a Lukewarm Toddy, so pre-warming your glass is important, as is using boiling water. Additionally, it would be worth your time to preheat your ingredients: If you have 3.5 oz. of room temp ingredients and 4 to 6 oz. of boiling water, it will average out to be tepid, which is not good.

The solution: fill a large shaker tin or bowl halfway with boiling water and then place a smaller shaker tin or metal bowl inside it, creating a kind of bain-marie. Add lemon juice, honey/ginger and whiskey to the smaller vessel and stir to gently heat it for about one or two minutes, before pouring it into your pre-warmed mug and topping with boiling water.

Also, a PSA: Do not heat it on the stove. Direct flame under pure spirits is an exceedingly bad idea.

Hot Toddy

Long before modern medicine offered shelves of over-the-counter cold medicines at local drug stores, mothers and grandmothers had natural remedies to help alleviate the discomfort of a common cold. Crowning that list is a cocktail of sorts that soothes a sore throat, aides in relieving sinus pressure, and acts as a sleeping agent to combat the disquieting body aches typical of the worst colds. Make no mistake, we run to the drug store as quickly as you do when we aren&rsquot feeling well, but there&rsquos a level of comfort in sipping something warm, delicious, and wildly helpful in squelching the biting symptoms of a seasonal sickness in addition to taking the cold medicine working in our systems. Lemon and honey coat the throat and cut through the unpleasant mucus lingering in the head, the cinnamon offers nothing more than sweet warmth to the beverage, and the bourbon takes a more aggressive approach in combatting congestion. After drinking the whole Hot Toddy, the 1.5 oz of bourbon in the concoction both puts you at ease and helps you drift into sleep so your body can recover. Admittedly, even if you&rsquore not feeling sick, the drink is tasty enough to make for simple enjoyment on a cold evening. Whether it&rsquos for yourself or for a loved one, we recommend keeping this recipe in your back pocket.
